One of my annual visitors from the Netherlands calls it his favorite place to eat “in the world.” We always go the diner when he comes. I guess my favorite place in town is the “world famous” (their words) Pleasantville Diner. I like owning a house with a yard and being able to walk to everything. I like Pleasantville because it’s quiet and pretty, and it’s filled with interesting people. Having grown up on a farm in Indiana, I find New York City crowded and noisy. It’s convenient to New York City, without my actually having to live there. Before that, I lived in Forest Hills and Stamford. I moved to Pleasantville in 1993, the same year I became puzzle editor of The New York Times. How long have you lived in Pleasantville? We caught up with the Pleasantville resident and founder of the Westchester Table Tennis Center, to fill in the blanks about his life in what may just be the most aptly named village in the county. Westchester is known as a place where a lot of smart people live, and it’s quite possible that our collective IQ as a county is just a tad higher because it is also the home of The New York Times’ legendary puzzle master, Will Shortz.

On one occasion, the Flixster website claimed my password was invalid. I had similar account hassles at several other points. After doing so, I immediately had the desired access to my movies. Instead, I was prompted to login to my Flixster account again. I didn’t actually have to re-enter the codes as it turned out. After failing with several potential fixes, I decided to essentially start over: I selected to re-enter the redemption code. Despite this, there was no option to stream or download the movies. When I launched the Collections app on the Air, the movies that had been approved on my Pro did show up correctly. After getting everything up and running on my Mac Pro, I went to my MacBook Air. Flixster Collections offers several features beyond access to UltraViolet movies, but they are not relevant to the topic here. In particular, you’ll need to install both the Flixster Collections app andĪdobe AIR. However, before you can watch a downloaded copy, you’ll have to do some additional work. Not only does this give you a higher quality version of the movie, but it allows you to view the movie even when you are not connected to the Internet. Accessing a movie via Flixsterįortunately, there is a better alternative-you can download the movie to your drive. ![]() In addition, the streamed version (at least of Crazy Stupid Love) was a mediocre-quality standard-definition copy (with lots of undesirable pixelation). If not, you’ll get a “plug-in failure” error. Streaming here requires that a recent version of Adobe Flash Player be installed. If you’ve had success to this point, you should be able to stream the movie in your web browser via the Flixster website. For now, it is pretty much just Flixster. Ultimately, you’ll be able to choose other methods of delivery. The UltraViolet account is what permits access to the movie Flixster is a delivery mechanism. To assemble the Dark Matter gaming monitor, you’ll need a Phillips-head screwdriver. There isn’t an effective dynamic contrast option though, so you won’t be seeing a major increase in contrast when looking at HDR content. HDR10 signals are supported, and the 42892 is DisplayHDR 400 compliant, which we confirmed in our tests. The 42892 has a superb overdrive, so we kept it at 165 Hz for our testing and were satisfied with its response and performance. 180 Hz is available too, but you’ll have to give up Adaptive-Sync to use it. The question of speed is answered with a native 165 Hz refresh rate. To answer the first question, yes, the 42892 uses a bit less power than other 27-inch 1440ps panels we’ve seen lately: 5-10W less at 200 nits brightness. Obviously, it has managed to come in at a very attractive price point. We previously saw IGZO technology in 2014 with Sharp’s early Ultra HD monitors, and in fact, Monoprice is using a Sharp-made part here. You get a lot of bang for the buck, and Monoprice’s IGZO monitor takes things further with an extra colorful display currently priced at $350 (opens in new tab).Ģ4.4 x 18.8 x 9.3 inches (620 x 478 x 236mm) ![]() 27-inch QHD gaming monitors are very popular because they represent an ideal balance of image quality, value and performance. ![]() Monoprice’s Dark Matter monitor is also a 1440p screen with a 165 Hz refresh rate that can overclock to 180 Hz, as well as HDR, DCI-P3 color and Adaptive-Sync. IGZO can be used with any panel type, but we’ve only seen it employed with an IPS (in-plane switching) pixel structure. But by applying the same power characteristics to an IGZO panel, it should exhibit faster panel response, in theory. ![]() Of course, since the chief consumer of electricity in a monitor is the backlight, basing the pixel array on a different material isn’t going to make a significant impact on your electric bill. IGZO material’s chief benefit is lower power consumption. That’s the substrate used in the semiconductors that comprise the individual sub-pixels of an LCD panel. Typical LCD panels are based on a substance called amorphous silicon. ![]() We provide leadership in the field by identifying and presenting the most significant and challenging art of our time, actively supporting the creation of new work, and producing original scholarship. It's spare at the start, and transcends into something cerebral and haunting. A Life Unto Itself combines the complex acid-trip of Harvestman with the piledriving thick of Neurosis guitars, and Von Till's own past solo stuff: a gothic take on Celtic and folk music. It's an album that drives home Von Till's unique brand of "rural psychedelia," and, in some ways, shows everything the man is capable of. Most recently, he's added a new album to his self-titled project discography: a solo record called A Life Unto Itself, which drops on May 5. Today, he runs the Neurot Recordings label, works as a schoolteacher, jets out of town on the weekend to write with Neurosis (he says they're working on a new record), and carves out new psychedelic sounds in his backyard studio as a part of his solo project Harvestman. But it is here, in dark forests of the Gem State, where the steely-eyed Neurosis guitarist and singer continues the unabashed DIY lifestyle he started for himself in the Bay Area 30 years ago.
